Getting Started

What is a northernbytes box?

It's a small LED matrix display that sits on a shelf or desk and cycles through live information — sports scores, weather, air quality, stocks, moon phase, the time, and nearby flights overhead. It connects to your WiFi and updates automatically, no app required.

How do I connect it to WiFi?

The first time you power it on, the box itself walks you through setup right on the display: turn the knob to find your network in the list, click to select it, then turn and click to enter your password one character at a time. Once connected, it remembers the network and reconnects automatically after that.

How do I customize what it shows?

Each box has its own web-based settings page — no app to install. Scan the QR code on the bottom of the unit (or your packing slip) to open it, then choose which apps to show (scores for your team, stocks you follow, your local weather and air quality, etc.), the order they cycle in, and how often it switches between them.

Using Your Box

What can the knob on top do?

Turn it to adjust brightness. A short click jumps to the next app in the cycle. A long press turns the display on or off. Holding it down for an extended press resets the saved WiFi network, in case you need to reconnect it to a different one.

Can I set it to turn off at night?

Yes. On the box's settings page you can set a sleep schedule so the display turns off automatically at a set time each night and back on in the morning — handy if it lives in a bedroom.

Does it need updates or maintenance?

No maintenance needed. New firmware ships automatically over WiFi — the box checks in periodically and updates itself in the background, so it just keeps getting better over time.
